Liquid Screed
What are the different pros and cons for liquid screed and sand and cement screed?

Our Services
- Liquid Screed
- Traditional Sand & Cement Screed
- Early Strength Sand & Cement Screed
- Fast Drying Sand & Cement Screed
- Fibre Reinforced Sand & Cement Screed
Liquid Screed:
Self-levelling and flows easily, ideal for large areas and quick application. Requires a sealed, non-porous surface before application. Typically laid in thinner layers compared to traditional screed. Offers a smooth, level finish with minimal manual work. May have longer drying times unless a fast-drying product is used. Not suitable for all environments (e.g. areas exposed to constant moisture without proper sealing).
Sand and Cement Screed:
More traditional and versatile for both domestic and commercial use. Better suited for areas requiring a thicker, stronger layer. Can be applied on unsealed surfaces and tolerates varying site conditions. Suitable for heavier loads and high-traffic areas. Requires more manual labour to apply and level properly. Often preferred for small or intricate spaces.More flexible in terms of finishing options and floor coverings.
Which type of screed is best for underfloor heating?
When installing underfloor heating, liquid screed (also known as flow screed) is generally the preferred choice due to its excellent thermal conductivity and ability to fully encase the heating pipes. Its free-flowing nature ensures there are no air pockets around the pipework, allowing for more efficient heat transfer and quicker warm-up times. Liquid screed can also be laid in thinner layers compared to traditional sand and cement screed, which means the system responds faster and uses less energy. While sand and cement screed can still be used, it requires more care during installation to achieve the same level of performance, making liquid screed the more efficient and cost-effective option for most underfloor heating systems.
